How we work

At labworks.io we believe in quality above all else. We strongly believe that voice will be the main way that people interact with technology in the future but only if the user never has to fear being misunderstood.

We believe that until the technology is ready to do that games can play a vital role in training users how to interact with assistants and in making the experience fun enough to overlook the technical constraints.

Our story

how our founder created a worldwide hit and didn’t realise

labworks.io started in 2016 as a conversation design consultancy designing chatbots, defining conversational strategy and providing training for multinational brands like Sage, Danone, Unilever, RBS and even the UK government!

In late 2016 Alexa launched in the UK but we were busy so we didn’t get around to playing with it it until the start of 2017.

Tom (our founder) decided that a good way to explore what Alexa could do would be to build a small game that he could then use as a case study when pitching to brands.

Despite being a former journalist rather than a developer he had just completed a 10 week learn-to-code evening course and with the help of a friend who could actually code was able create our first game - ‘Would you rather?’

Once he published it he wrote a presentation about it for a meetup he was attending and then promptly forgot about it.

That changed six weeks later when, 6 weeks later, he got a phone call from a private number. “Hi, it’s David from Amazon. You know that game you made…”

It turned out that ‘Would you rather?’ was the third most popular skill on Alexa and that Amazon were going to start paying him as part of their Developer Rewards Programme.

After the shock receded he realised that if he could launch a few more he might have a decent business.

And so, he hired the first member of the team to take on the development work and set about designing another Alexa game.

As each game launched and became a success he was able to hire more people and invest in more groundbreaking projects including our interactive story game ‘Star Commander’ which was a finalist in the 2018 Alexa Game’s competition and ‘Trivia Hero’ which Amazon nominated as one of it’s best games of the year.

All of which led to the cherry on the cake of ‘True or False’, our second ever game, winning the People’s Choice at the 2019 Webby awards in one of the brand new Voice categories.

As for what’s next - you’ll have to wait and see!
